So recently me and sex dolls my friend were having a discussion about the weirdest place name and it eventually led to the topic of whether ‘Dildo’ is a Norwegian name. I mean, it’s totally something you would find in Norway right? After all, they are a really open and liberal country, and they have the most varied, original and quirky place names. I couldn’t help but think it was some hilarious pun of a joke.
So I asked my friend if they had ever heard of such a place name in Norway, and that’s when they dropped the documentary bombshell in my lap: A place called Dildo, in Norway! I’m like, what? This isn’t a joke? How can a place be called Dildo in a country? With so much history and ambience, surely, such a risqué name wouldn’t be tolerated by the norms of the society?
Anyway, I decided to dig a bit deeper and that’s when I stumbled upon the most bizarre story of all! It turns out that the place name ‘Dildo’ is derived from an Old Norse word ‘Dil Harbour’. This was during the time of Vikings, and apparently the harbour was likened to the shape of a phallic object. Yes, a penis! This is where the phallic harbour got it’s name ‘Dildo’.
However, contrary to popular belief, the modern day version of the place-name is rather infamous for being a quaint fishing village instead of its raunchy roots. So there you have it! I guess the true story behind the name ‘dildo’ is far tamer than what we first assumed.
The really awesome thing about it is, the current official spelling of this place name is actually Dildoeyy, instead of the original Dildo. Now I’m not trying to be judgmental, but I find it so refreshing that the Norwegians have kept the name but modified it to appease the modern times. It’s like they are rebelliously protecting their history and folklore, without really compromising with their dignity.
Now that I think more about it, it’s kind of poetic and really heartening to learn how these brave Norwegians stand up for their heritage, sex toys without really compromising on what’s right and wrong. That being said, I guess it’s really inspiring that in this world of uncertainty and confusion, there’s at least one place in Norway that proudly protect their culture and history.
Going back to the topic, is ‘Dildo’ a Norwegian name? Well, I think so! Looking at the past and present, it has a colourful history that goes way beyond what I first assumed, and it still stands the test of time despite the changes throughout this period of time. So I’m sure that ‘Dildo’ is a Norwegian name – and one that can never be forgotten!
